Student Information Network Center 1983 Article

The student Information Network Center is currently entering its fifth year of operation and is serving more students than ever.

Student poll results show 50 percent of undergraduate respondents reported using SINC in 1984. This is an increase of 5 percent over 1983 figures and a considerable jump from the 1981 spring poll in which only 22 percent of undergraduate respondents reported using SINC.

SINC supervisor, Eugertha Bates, describes SINC as an "information brokerage system" whose job is to disseminate information to students. Poll results show the majority of undergraduate and graduate student users reported visiting SINC "once or twice" during spring quarter. According to Bates, SINC personnel were kept busy last year handling over 120,000 student contacts.

This year SINC once again enjoyed considerably high ratings. Each of the seven attributes was rated "very good" by at least 39 percent of the undergraduate users. Ratings ranged from 3.26 for "quality of service" to 3.48 for "convenience of location."

George Safford, director of the Office of Organizations and Activities, is pleased with the ratings. He hopes to make SINC accessible to even more students in the future by creating SINC branches at other campus locations. Additional plans for SINC include the installation of a telephone tape message system during winter quarter. The tapes, which students can request to hear on the phone, cover subjects ranging from registration procedures, to information on handling stress.
