Alvie G. Bailey, a 22-year non-academic employee of the University of Illinois at Chicago, was selected to receive the Janice Watkins Award for distinguished civil service. The award was presented posthumously by Ann Smith, associate chancellor, and accepted by Bailey’s husband, James, at a ceremony Dec. 9.

Bailey died Sept. 22, 1988 after a year-long battle with cancer. She was 45. During her tenure at UIC, Bailey served in a variety of key administrative support roles throughout the University, including the Colleges of Engineering and Dentistry, the Chancellor’s Office (Urban Health Program) and the University of Illinois Hospital department of nursing where she was selected outstanding employee of the year in 1980.

Her last eight years were spent at the College of Nursing in the office of the associate dean for academic affairs and most recently, the office of development.

“Mrs. Bailey was a special person, whose talents, sensitivity and unfailing good humor endeared her to staff, students and faculty,” said Mi Ja Kim, acting dean of the College of Nursing.

“There is no end to the good things that can be said about Mrs. Bailey,” said Loretta Gullatte, departmental information supervisor for the office of the Dean, College of Nursing. “She was well-known and respected at work and in community for her generous spirit and her constant sunny disposition. She boosted morale at the college and throughout the University and she is sadly missed. Mrs. Bailey is exactly the kind of employee that Janice Watkins would have been proud to have been associated with her award.”

The purpose of the Janice Watkins Award is to bring to the attention of the University community the achievements of non-academic employees, to show the dedication that they demonstrate to their required tasks, to give exceptional nonacademics the gratitude of the University and the recognition of their peers, and to honor the memory of outstanding nonacademic employee Janice Watkins.

“Alvie Bailey exemplified the characteristics on which this award is based – dedication to the University, efficiency, enthusiasm and sensitivity to peers, students, faculty and visitors,” said Susan Dudas, acting associate dean of academic affairs, College of Nursing. “Loyalty, sound judgement and flexibility were the qualities that made her special. We miss the warmth, friendly attitude and the joy she shared with us”.

Watkins, for whom the award was named, was hit by an automobile and killed after leaving work on the evening of Dec. 19, 1974. As a supervisor in the Insurance Office, a past president of the Nonacademic Employees’ Council, and an active member of several University committees, she was known to virtually all of the campus community.
