On December 19, 1986, an outstanding nonacademic employee, Joan M. Peter, received the gratitude of the University and the recognition of her peers in the form of the Janice Watkins Distinguished Civil Service Award Peters is the administrative assistant to the director of the College of Medicine at Rockford Nominations for the award and letters of support were reviewed by a screening committee (consisting of nonacademics), the Staff Advisory Council, director of personnel and the vice chancellor for administration.
